About Blackjack

Blackjack is a deceptively simple card game with a high degree of strategy. Also known as twenty-one, the rules are simple. The object of the game is to get your hand as close to the number 21 as possible without going over. Going over 21 is a bust and is counted as a loss.

The flow of play in Blackjack is a dealer and five to seven players. Each player is dealt a card, including the dealer, face up. Then a second card is given to each player. Whether this card is face up or face down depends on the variant of the game being played. Face up cards allow card counters a greater degree of accuracy in their predictions, and so face down cards are more often used in games where only a single deck of cards is used.

Card values are relatively standard. Two through ten are face value. Jack, queen and king are worth ten as well. Aces are flexible. The player can decide to count them as one or as eleven. A hand with an ace in it is typically called soft. Any hand that totals 21 on the first two cards is an automatic win.

When a player can see their two-card hand, they are given several options. They can hit, which gives them another card in an attempt to get closer to 21. They can stand, and end their turn. They can double down, which doubles their bet, deals them one more card and finishes on that final value. If they have two cards of the same value, they can split, which separates them into two new hands. Finally, they can retire which surrenders half their bet and pulls them from the hand.

Play continues around the table until all players have either reached a final value and stood or have busted or retired from the hand. .
